Enjoy the Mid-Autumn Moon in Kyoto

*The Mid-Autumn Moon, also known as the Harvest Moon in Western tradition, is a special full moon celebrated with traditional events throughout Japan.

On Monday, October 6, 2025, the most beautiful full moon of the year, known as the Mid-Autumn Moon, will shine brightly in Kyoto’s clear night sky, adding a special beauty to the ancient cityscape.

“Kangetsu” (moon viewing) is a refined Japanese tradition of admiring the moon’s serene glow. The Mid-Autumn Moon is the centerpiece of this custom, celebrated with special events throughout Kyoto.

On this auspicious night and during the moon-viewing season, various cultural events take place across Kyoto, including koto (Japanese harp) performances, tea ceremonies, special garden viewings, and haiku gatherings. Immerse yourself in Kyoto’s sophisticated culture and the enchanting moonlight for an unforgettable experience.

Tea ceremonies on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September 8 to 30 (reservation required by 4 pm the day before). Fee 9,000 JPY per person (includes tea ceremony, garden tour, and light meal). Duration approx. 3 hours.

Daikakuji Temple & Osawa Pond

Evening Moon Viewing” from October 4 to 6, 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm (last entry 8:30 pm). Admission 500 JPY adults, 300 JPY children. Separate daytime admission required.

Shinsenen Garden

Moon-viewing tea ceremony on October 4 from 5 pm. Fee 700 JPY (limited to 150 guests). Advance tickets available from September 1. Special garden viewing included.

Chishakuin Temple

Moon-viewing events on October 5 and 6. Tickets start at 6,500 JPY (includes bento lunch). Check official website for details.

Kyoto’s Three Great Festivals Jidai Matsuri

The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) began in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto’s founding. About 2,000 participants parade through the city dressed in historical costumes from the Meiji Restoration back to the Heian period, showcasing 1,000 years of history in about two hours.

Though the autumn leaves are not yet at their peak, now is the perfect time to enjoy seasonal sweets featuring chestnuts and rich pumpkin flavors. We have carefully selected some irresistible treats that capture the essence of autumn in every bite.

Panda no Sanpo

Famous for dango (sweet rice dumplings), a traditional treat for the Mid-Autumn Moon. Located within walking distance from Rinn Premium Nijo-jo Kita. Seasonal panda-shaped dango are available, such as Halloween-themed in October and autumn leaves in November.

Waguri Senmon Saori

A popular shop specializing in Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc, located in a renovated townhouse along the Kamo River. The rich chestnut flavor and freshly whipped cream make it a perfect autumn dessert. Rinn Premium Koki West/East is accessible by public transportation in about 15 minutes.

Murin-an Café

Former villa of statesman Yamagata Aritomo, offering drinks and sweets in a room overlooking the garden as it appeared 120 years ago. The garden café is open year-round, but autumn foliage viewing is exclusive to this season.Rinn Premium Nijo-jo Kita is accessible by public transportation in about 30 minutes.

Located near Gojo Station, this café reopens its Taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) sales around October. Taiyaki is available for dine-in or takeout from 2 pm.
