Experience Kyoto’s time-honored year-end rite, the traditional “Okera-mairi,” from 7:30 p.m. on Dec 31 until dawn on New Year’s Day. Praying for good health, participants swirl the sacred Okera flame in straw ropes, sending wishes skyward as the glowing fire pirouettes—a luminous dance of history and faith.
